Day #14. Beluga Whale Day!
Here is some of what we are planning to do on Thursday! 🙂
Activities
IMPORTANT NOTE: These printable activities will be FREE for you to download, but only until Beluga Whale Day is over! So, make sure to download them even if you are going to do Beluga Whale Day later in the week – that way you can still snag them for free. If you could leave a review behind afterwards, that would be amazing too! THANK YOU!! 🥰❤️
#1. Blubber Science Experiment (How Beluga Whales Stay Warm)
Grab some Crisco and print out this worksheet to give your kids a hand=on understanding of how blubber helps animals stay warm! I used this experiment when I taught Marine Biology last year in our co-op and the kids LOVED it!
#2. Beluga Whale Salt Painting
Your kids can use this printable to add a Beluga Whale to their painting! If they haven’t tried a salt painting yet, they could use ocean colors and try it now.
#3. Label the Beluga Whale Worksheet
This Label the Beluga Whale Worksheet comes with a word bank at the bottom of the page and an answer key on the next page.
I’m going to have my kids continue to do these label worksheets after watching the educational videos (those links are below if you scroll down).
#4. Puffin Mini Research Book (Writing Activity)
I made this mini book so that my kids could have something in hand to take notes on while we watch some of the educational videos below.
I’ve found that it’s really helpful to build their listening skills and to help them pay better attention, if they have some specific information to listen for.
You will want to print these two pages DOUBLE-SIDED and flip it on the short edge. Cut once down the blue line. Fold both pieces of paper and then tuck the bottom piece into the top piece. Make sure the page numbers line up before stapling shut.
Snack
Snack time today is a Banana Beluga Whale! It’s similar to the Narwhal, just minus the small pretzel sticks (for the tusk). I used crackers when I was making this (Nilla wafers would probably be yummier). You could also use apple slices instead of the crackers if you want to keep this a fruit only snack!
Books
(Note: Some of these books are new to me, so be sure to skim it beforehand if you want to make sure it’s something your family values align with).
Today we’ll be reading, “Hello, Baby Beluga” by Darrin Lunde and “Beluga Whales” by Victoria Blakemore.
If you were unable to grab these books from the library or store, here is a read aloud option on YouTube!
Educational Videos
Pick and choose (or watch all of) the videos below to learn more about Beluga Whales! ❄️
Older kids can watch this full documentary to learn a lot more about Beluga Whales! As always, I recommend watching it with your kids (I wasn’t able to preview the entire video and sometimes nature documentaries can get a little crazy!).
Do You Have More Time? Here Is An Extra Idea!
#1. Follow along to draw a Beluga Whale over at Art for Kids Hub.
I hope you guys enjoyed learning about Beluga Whales! 💙 If you need to print out the Winter Calendar still, drop your email below and I’ll send it right over!
PS: Check back soon for my blog post about Animal Tracks Day! Which just so happens to be the LAST DAY of Winter School!! 🙂
