Phew! Finally done with my printables for Hot Cocoa Day! I think my kids are the most excited for this day so far🙂 We love hot chocolate at our house!
Are you visiting for the first time? You are still able to grab my free Christmas school calendar! You can download it below and you can also join our Christmas School FB group here 🙂 It is full of the most wonderful mommas!
Each special day on the calendar will get it’s own blog post – full of activity directions, printables, YouTube audiobook stories, and anything else to help make this EASY on you. Because the whole point of Christmas School is to pick what your kids would enjoy the most and then just have fun together. Don’t plan to do EVERYTHING (unless you guys are feeling ambitious that day 😉 ).
Keep reading below for more about Hot Cocoa Day….my kids have been really excited for this one this week! We love making hot chocolate during these loooooong winter months in Michigan!
Day #4. Hot Cocoa Day!
Here is what we are planning to do on Wednesday 🙂
Just a reminder that my kids are in 4th, 2nd, and PreK grades. If you have different ages and feel like what we are doing isn’t something your kids would be interested in, feel free to scroll below! I’ll add more activity ideas at the bottom of each blog post.
Activities
My plan for today is to see if my kids want to do this hot chocolate mug painting again (we did this back when it first snowed). And then we’ll be doing this writing activity, for sure!
After that, I’ll set up a hot chocolate bar and then we’ll play some hot chocolate bingo while we have snack time.
If you feel like leaving a review at my TPT shop afterwards, I’d greatly appreciate it! THANK YOU!!
#1. Design & Paint A Hot Chocolate Mug (+ Optional Marshmallow Name)
My kids actually did this about a month ago when we first got snow. They reeeeeally want all things hot chocolate that day, so I hopped on my laptop and threw this together last minute. I’m not sure if we’ll do it again this week or not (Wednesday is our busy day anyways, so if we don’t get to this specific activity, that is fine). BUT I wanted to share it with you all! I love how cute it turned out and they REALLY loved painting it! Even my 10-year-old wanted to cut out marshmallows and put her name on top.
I wrote the short poem that is included…this could be glued on the mug (like I did for my 4-year-old’s mug below…he went a little crazy with the paint😆) or off to the side. You could cut out the mug and glue both onto a piece of construction paper. You could even cut out the mug itself, punch a hole in the poem, and tie it onto the mug’s handle!
DIRECTIONS:
STEP #1. Print out pages 5-6 of this PDF printable.
STEP #2. Have your student start designing and painting their hot chocolate mug. Encourage them to make sure and paint their hot chocolate inside the mug!
STEP #3. While it is drying, have them cut out the marshmallows that they will need.
STEP #4. Once it is dry, glue the marshmallows at the top of the mug in the hot chocolate to make their name!
STEP #5. Cut out and glue the poem inside the mug (if they want, depending on their design). They could also cut out the mug and glue on a piece of construction paper (you could glue the poem on the construction paper instead). Another idea would be to cut out the mug and punch a hole in the poem. You could then tie the poem to the handle of the mug 🙂
#2. Play Some Hot Chocolate Bingo!
My kids love bingo, so they are really looking forward to this on Wednesday!
There are 16 different bingo cards in this PDF…AND the call cards have a rhyming riddle to go with each image, for some extra fun (and to build those listening skills). You could read the riddle for your older kids or just say the card name for your younger ones, if you think the riddle will be too difficult.
Mini marshmallows work GREAT as your bingo chips, btw 🙂
#3. Hot Chocolate Writing Activity
Ask your kiddos to imagine that they are the world’s BEST hot chocolate maker…what would their three secret ingredients be for creating that best cup of hot chocolate? This is just a simple writing exercise for beginner writers, but you could expand on it and have your older ones write more of an essay on some lined paper.
Snack
Today I’ll be making a hot chocolate bar for the kids! Have fun setting out anything you think your kids would love…I’m going to set out whipped cream, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, leftover crushed candy canes, mini marshmallows, and some whole candy canes (for stirring).
Books
(Note: I only skimmed these books, so be sure to skim it also if you want to make sure it’s something your family values align with).
We’ll be reading “Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate” by Etta Kraner today. We’ll also be reading, “Hot Cocoa Calm” by Kira Willey.
In case you don’t make it to the library, here are the YouTube Read Aloud links for these books 🙂
Do You Have More Time? Here Are Some Extra Ideas!
#1. Make some hot chocolate slime! I found this tutorial here from Fantastic Fun & Learning.
#2. Try this mindful meditation exercise with hot chocolate breathing!
#3. Want to add in some music today for your littles? This hot chocolate song is so cute (but it’ll get stuck in your head, just forewarning you now haha!)
#4. Follow along with this tutorial on how to draw a hot chocolate cartoon! My kids love Art for Kids Hub 🙂
#5. Watch this video about where chocolate comes from. We love these videos from Mystery Science!
I hope you guys have a wonderful day! I can’t wait to see everything you and your kids create and do! Check back soon for my Snowman Day post 🙂
