Welcome to the new school year! I’m so excited to get started! We officially start all of our schoolwork today (September 9th), so it will be a busy, but fun day over here as we get back into our school rhythm and routines.
Did your family start already? I am hoping and praying that each of you will have a wonderful school year! ❤️
We are kicking off this month with the “My Five Senses” theme today! I feel like this is a really popular theme to do in the beginning of the school year (or at least, we’ve always done it in the first part of the school year anyways).
Keep scrolling below to see what is planned for today!
Are you new to these monthly themes? No worries! You can join our FB group at any time and print out the Me & My World September Calendar to get started! Just scroll to the bottom of this post and pop your email in so I can send the free calendar to you.
Keep reading below for My Five Senses Day activities and printables!
Day #1. My Five Senses Day!
Here is some of what we are planning to do on Monday! 🙂 Did you want to download and print out everything for this month? You now can! Grab the Me & My World Activity Bundle here!
This 98-page PDF bundle comes with every printable you’ll need for this month PLUS extra printables like a master supply list, suggested reading list, themed snack photos, grocery list, and a teacher guide for each day! It is great for saving time by downloading and printing everything all at once! You’ll also receive a Me & My World bookmark and punch card for your kids to use as they move through each themed day. 🥰
Activities
IMPORTANT NOTE: In the past, I’ve offered most items for free for 24 hours, on each themed day. I will still be giving away some freebies here and there, but most printables will stay exclusive for those who purchase the monthly bundle. There have been some concerns with a few individuals taking advantage of everything in my store being free at one point and downloading printables while they are free only to turn around and sell for their own profit. For that reason, I need to make a change and protect my shop and whichever activities I did spend a lot of my time on creating. Thank you for understanding and for helping support me as I put time into making these themes! If you are unable to purchase the monthly bundle, I would definitely still love to have you tag along and use the snack ideas, YouTube educational video links, and read aloud book links! And as I mentioned above, there will still be occasional freebies too! ❤️
#1. My Five Senses Writing Activity
Here is a worksheet for your students to practice their handwriting, improve their writing, and work on vocabulary as they use their five senses to analyze popcorn! At the bottom of the page, there is a creative writing prompt as well.
#2. Five Senses Popcorn Word Sorting Activity
This PDF set includes 24 popcorn kernel cards and 5 popcorn buckets labeled with each of the five senses. You will simply cut out the pieces, turn over the popcorn cards, and let them start playing! Students will pick a popcorn kernel, read the word, and decide which of their five senses they would use to experience that item.
This is a great, interactive way to encourage discussion and reinforce learning as you talk about their five senses with them!
#3. My Five Senses Popcorn Craft – FREE TODAY ONLY!
As I mentioned in the notes above, most of the printable activities will no longer be free for the reason mentioned. However, I did say that I would share a couple printables for free, so here is the first one! This popcorn bucket craft is free but only for today only!
You can use this many different ways, for example, gluing it to a white piece of cardstock and letting your students paint the popcorn on or gluing on pieces of crumpled crepe paper. They can also use their fingerprint and stamp on popcorn instead of using a brush!
Snack
There are TWO different ideas to choose from for snack time today! You can just do popcorn and call it good! You can also do a “food challenge” (as my kids call it) and let your kids guess what certain foods are by using their sense of taste (smell and touch too). To do this, you will want to create an assortment of different items for them to try. Once they are ready, they will need to put on a blindfold before trying each item. My kids will do this just for fun, but it’s a great activity to go with today’s lesson!
Books
(Note: Some of the books this month are new to me, so be sure to skim it beforehand if you want to make sure it’s something your family values align with).
Today we’ll be reading, “I Hear a Pickle” by Rachel Isadora and “My Five Senses” by Aliki.
If you were unable to grab these books from the library or store, here are some read-aloud options on YouTube!
Do You Have More Time? Here Are Some Educational Videos!
Pick and choose (or watch all of) the videos below to learn more about our five senses.
#1. Do your kids like Pete the Cat? Mine do! Here is a video of him explaining more about what our five senses are.
#2. Here is another video from The Dr. Binocs Show that explains our five senses further.
#3. Here is a longer video that incorporates some nature! It would be fun to watch this before going outside and taking your own version of a “5 Senses Nature Hike”!
#4. Your younger ones can sing along with Jack Hartmann about our five senses!
I hope your students enjoyed learning about their five senses today! 💙 If you need to print out the Me & My World Calendar still, go ahead and drop your email below so that I can send it right over!
PS: Come back tomorrow for the “All About Me” blog post! 🙂
