Day #5. Snowman Day!
Here is what we are planning to do today! π
Just a reminder that my kids are in 4th, 2nd, and PreK grades. If you have different ages and feel like what we are doing isnβt something your kids would be interested in, feel free to scroll below! Iβll add more activity ideas at the bottom of each blog post.
Activities
Snow and snowmen are kind of our thing way up here in Northern Michigan. Well, not really MY thing (I like sunshine and warmth π ). But my kids LOVE snow and all things snowmen…so they are excited to have a special day dedicated to it on the calendar π
First, we’ll be doing this snowman sponge painting, followed by this silly snowman craft! And then I’ve never tried this snowman exploding science experiment before, but we are going to attempt it and see how it goes π
#1. Snowman Sponge Art Project

I thought this would be a simple, but pretty project! All you need to do is print out this snowman template, cut out the snowman, and tape it to a piece of cardstock (or heavy painting paper).
Then grab something to sponge paint with! I used crumpled tinfoil, but you could use bubble wrap, a bunch of Q-tips tied together with a rubber band, etc.

Have your kids cover the entire outline of the snowman with their paint. Then carefully remove the snowman and there should be a pretty decent outline of him left behind.
They could then paint in his features or leave it blank. I think adding some glue and glitter inside his shape would be neat too!
They could also just paint/color the snowman itself, instead of attempting this sponge paint project π This snowman printable could be used many different ways!

#2. Make a Silly Snowman Paper Crown/Hat

My kids made something similar to this for Thanksgiving (it was a Turkey Hat) and they LOVED it! So I knew I wanted to make another one for Christmas.
There are 8 different templates available to choose from!

This is pretty easy…you’ll just print it out after your child picks which Silly Snowman to make π They will color it, cut it out, glue the hat and scarf on. After you tape the 3 headband pieces together, you just measure it around your child’s head and tape it accordingly. Super easy!
PS: this PDF does include detailed instructions WITH PICTURES on how to put it together π
#3. Exploding Snowman Science Experiment

This fun science experiment is from MomBrite! You can find her tutorial here!
#4. Snowball Toss Game
We have a TON of these fake snowballs downstairs. We’ve had them for a couple of years and my kids actually still play with them (even when we have REAL snow outside haha). When our friends come over, we can often hear all of the kids having fake snowball fights downstairs. These are really worth the money, in my opinion (would definitely make a good Christmas present!). Anyways, I’m going to use these pretend snowballs and set up a snowball toss game (similar to the jingle bell toss game that we did during Polar Express Day – they loved that game)
Another simple game idea would be to set up some “snowmen” using white cups (or even toilet paper) and take turns using a ball to try and knock them down π
Snack
Today for snack time, I’ll be making these fruit snowmen! You’ll need a banana, strawberry, chocolate chips, small pretzel sticks, and an orange M&M to make this!

Books
(Note: I only skimmed these books, so be sure to skim it also if you want to make sure itβs something your family values align with).
Today I was only planning to watch Frosty with the kids later BUT I decided to look up and add a few book ideas in case anyone would like to read or listen to a book instead π
If we have time, we’ll be listening to βSneezy the Snowman” written by Maureen Wright today. I also thought, “The Giving Snowman” by Julia Zheng looked like a good read too.
Here are the YouTube Read Aloud links for these books π
Do You Have More Time? Here Are Some Extra Ideas!
#1. If you have snow, go outside and spend some time playing with the kids in it π
#2. If you don’t have snow, try making play snow using hair conditioner and baking soda!
#3. Have a family movie night watching Frosty!
#4. Watch this video from Mystery Science about why snow is white π
#5. Watch this video about how to build a snowman and think like an engineer π
#6. Watch this video and follow along to draw a cute snowman cartoon!
I hope you guys have a wonderful day! I canβt wait to see everything you and your kids create and do! Check back soon for my Gingerbread Day post π
