On April 8th, many states in US will experience a total solar eclipse!
With so many talking about it, have your kids asked about it? Do you live near or in the path of totality? Will you and your family be able to experience it?
Here are some ideas to use as you teach your kids about it and celebrate this experience together! ❤️
Solar Eclipse 2024 Activity Ideas
You can grab my mini activity bundle for the Solar Eclipse 2024 here (it has all of the printables that are mentioned below)!
You can also purchase the printables below individually! However, you’ll save 75% by grabbing the mini bundle above. 🥰
#1. Solar Eclipse Fact Cards
Print and laminate these cards to use as you teach your kids about what a solar eclipse is! I like to set these out on a wooden board (Montessori style), next to everything else I’ve gathered for this mini unit study.
#2. FREE Solar Eclipse Oil Pastel Project
Grab this template here and help your child follow the directions to create a pretty piece of oil pastel artwork!
#3. Three Types of Solar Eclipses (Worksheet)
Here is a simple worksheet that they can read through and then color the sun/moon off to the side.
#4. Solar Eclipse Craft
Here is a cute, hands-on craft for your kids to make! Print out these three pages and color the stars on the cover page. After that, have your child cut out the circle and glue the sides to the top of the sun page (ONLY GLUE 3 SIDES! Leave one of the shorter sides unglued). Cut out the moon and tape or glue it to a large popsicle stick. Now your child can place the moon inside to demonstrate what happens during a solar eclipse.
#5. Solar Eclipse Journal Page
Print out this journal mini-book and use it to have your child write down their thoughts and feelings as they experience the solar eclipse. There are journal pages for things such as, predicting what they think will happen, what did they observe, and what was their favorite moment.
There is also a space on each page for them to draw something that goes along with the journal questions or thoughts.
#6. Solar Eclipse Playdoh Mat
Print your choice of the playdoh mat, laminate, and grab some playdoh for your little one to practice what happens as the moon starts to block our view of the sun!
#7. 2024 Solar Eclipse Paper Crown
It’s never a party without a paper crown 😅 If you’d like a simple coloring project and a fun way to celebrate the day, grab this paper crown for your kids to assemble!
#8. Solar Eclipse Watercolor Art
Print out this PDF on cardstock and pick one of the two options for your child to paint!
#9. Why Does It Get Dark During a Solar Eclipse?
We love videos from Mystery Science! Here is a great one for kids wondering why it gets dark during the Solar Eclipse.
#10. What is a Solar Eclipse?
Here is a short 4-minute video for kids about what a Solar Eclipse is. This video talks more about the different types of eclipses.
#11. Total Solar Eclipse: A Stellar Friendship Story by Jayme Sandberg
Here is a cute picture book for little learners!
#12. Silly Song for the Solar Eclipse
Do your kids like to learn information by using music? Here is a song all about the Solar Eclipse!
#13. Solar Eclipse and Planetarium Field Trip
